The panel, a section of the perimeter of a mandala palace near a ‘gate’ is worked in high relief in repousse copper. It depicts a row of joyously dancing musicians in the Nepalese manner above a ribbed border and between vases and flanking a dorje which rests on a lotus above a crescent moon; beneath a band of lozenges which supports a row of swags, the centre of which is in the form of a lotus flower enclosing a bell. Flanking the entrance to the ‘gate’ is a pillar, a kneeling elephant supporting a viyala style lion adjacent. Further decorative edges form the outer perimeter.
For similar motifs in a Newari influenced mandala at Shalu monastery see pl.72 “Tibetan Art” by Amy Heller.
