2. Medicine Buddha Tibeto-Chinese Circa 18th Century Gilt bronze Height: 4 ¼” (10.5cm) |
![]() Detail: back Baisyaguru, the Medicine Buddha, is seated on a double lotus throne, his right hand holding his attribute (distinguishing feature)– the myrobalan plant – a healing herb. His robe covers his left shoulder, leaving the right breast and arm bare. Delicate incised work forms the edge of his robe. His pleasant face bears an urna, while his hair is arranged in characteristic tight curls and covers his cintimani-tipped usnisa (cranial protruberance). Traces of the original lapis pigment remain in his hair. Some wear to gilding at rear. Interestingly, his face has been left ungilt, indicating that it would have originally been cold-gold painted. |
